Sleep eye masks are a great help to get some quality sleep time for those times when we can’t sleep. I cannot vouch more for these highly affordable bedside accessories and wished I had known and used them a lot earlier. They probably would have saved me a whole lot of fidgeting and sleepless nights.
Although it is not apparent at first, sleep eye masks quickly put your body in sleep mode after you put them on. There are those that come with ear plugs and these ear plugs further isolate you from the outside world, which comes in handy when you are trying to sleep in a noisy area.
When we go to sleep, what actually happens is our body shuts itself off from the real world, or rather, the five sense world. So when you put on an eye mask, you are actually helping your body shut off one of the five senses. Having your eyes surrounded by total darkness ensures it is shut down completely.
To explain further, the eyes are strongly connected to sleep. At the back of the eye is the retina, which receives light and transmits the signals to the part of the brain that controls the automatic functions of our body, like sleep and sweating (to name but two). This part of the brain is the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus in turn, is connected to the pineal gland, which is the endocrine gland responsible for producing melatonin, the sleep hormone.
When you put on an eye mask, it fools the hypothalamus into telling the pineal gland to produce melatonin, which then induces sleep. Light entering the eye on the other hand, triggers the stoppage of melatonin production, because it signals “daytime” to the body. So as you can guess, eye masks are really useful in inducing sleep.
There are many types of eye masks with different designs and even those that come with special scents. A sleep eye mask comes in handy for all those situations where you require sleep but need to shut out the light completely.
